Practice Areas

The Office’s primary responsibility is to represent the Board of County Commissioners and its staff, and advise them in all legal matters.  Attorneys in the Office are involved in extensive litigation, including state and federal trial and appellate work, in a multitude of substantive areas: constitutional law, federal civil rights, election law, environmental enforcement, zoning and land use planning, eminent domain, labor, consumer protection, municipal bond financing, utility regulation, torts, workers’ compensation, medical malpractice, hospital and health care, public housing, ad valorem taxation, contract negotiation, and competitive bidding.

Some of the public facilities represented by the County Attorney's Office are: Metrorail and Metromover, a billion dollar rapid transit system; the Public Health Trust, which operates the largest teaching hospital in the Southeast United States; the Port of Miami, the world's largest passenger seaport; Miami International Airport, one of the nation's busiest airports; a world class zoo; the Miami Performing Arts Center; and several art and history museums.

To accomplish the breadth and scope of the work the Office handles, the Office is organized into eleven sections, with many attorneys serving in more than one section.  Each section is overseen by a section head who, in addition to handling their own cases, is responsible for the administration of the section and assigning and monitoring of other attorney’s cases.  You can read more about each section below:
